About NPISignal

NPISignal makes public U.S. healthcare-provider data easier to search, and federal exclusion data easier to act on. It is two things sharing one set of sources: a free public reference — NPI lookup, provider profiles, taxonomy codes and exclusion search, all usable with no account — and a paid service for healthcare organizations that need a roster screened against federal exclusion lists on a schedule, with a record of having done it.

NPISignal is not a government website, is not operated by or affiliated with CMS, HHS, or any federal, state, or local agency, and is not a licensing, credentialing, or accreditation body of any kind. Every fact NPISignal shows about a provider comes from a public federal data set — it is republished, not generated.

Free, and staying free

• An NPI lookup covering every enumerated provider in the CMS NPPES data.
• Provider profiles showing what CMS publishes, plus an NPI-based federal screening check.
• Exclusion search against the HHS-OIG LEIE and SAM.gov, one party at a time, with every match explained.
• Directory pages by state, city, and taxonomy for browsing rather than searching by name.
• A taxonomy directory explaining what each specialty code means, and an NPI validator.
• Reference guides on how NPIs, NPPES and federal exclusion screening actually work.

None of that is rate limited and none of it requires an account. A person checking one provider should get their answer immediately, and that is deliberately not the thing NPISignal charges for.

What the paid service adds

The work a healthcare organization actually has to do is not one search — it is the same list of people, every month, with a record afterwards of what was checked and what was decided. That is what NPISignal charges for: a roster screened automatically when the source data changes, potential matches presented as comparisons a person can review, and a screening history that can be handed to an auditor. Where the data comes from

Every fact on a provider page traces back to a small number of named federal data sets, refreshed on the schedule each publisher sets — never invented, interpolated, or estimated. See Data Sources for exactly which files, which fields, and how current NPISignal's copy is.

How results are computed

Search, status, and the small set of derived facts NPISignal shows (like whether a record is currently active) are computed the same deterministic way for every provider, with no manual review or per-provider judgment involved. See Methodology for the exact rules.

What NPISignal is not

• Not medical advice, and not a substitute for a conversation with a qualified professional.
• Not legal or compliance advice, and not a determination that any organization is compliant.
• Not a credentialing or license-verification service. An NPI is not a licence.
• Not a way to conclusively verify identity. The public exclusion data contains no Social Security number, and where two people share a name and a date of birth it cannot separate them — the issuing agency’s own process can.
• Not a substitute for state Medicaid exclusion screening, which NPISignal does not yet cover.

How NPISignal is funded

The paid monitoring service funds the free one. NPISignal may also display non-intrusive advertising on public pages to help cover hosting and data-processing costs; advertising is never shown before a search result loads, never placed next to an action like copying an NPI, never shown to an account holder inside the application, and never influences which providers appear in search results or how they are described. Every provider is described from the same public fields, regardless of any commercial relationship — and no organization can pay to change what a screening result says about anybody.
